Vaginal Candidiasis

Disease | May 12, 2026

Overview

Vaginal candidiasis, also known as a yeast infection, is a common fungal infection of the vagina caused by an overgrowth of Candida species, most often Candida albicans. This organism is normally present in small amounts in the vaginal flora without causing harm. However, when the natural balance of microorganisms is disrupted, Candida can multiply excessively and lead to infection.

The condition is very common among women of reproductive age and can occur at any time, especially when hormonal changes, antibiotics, or immune system changes affect the vaginal environment. Vaginal candidiasis is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection, although sexual activity may sometimes contribute to irritation or recurrence.

While it is generally not a serious condition, vaginal candidiasis can cause significant discomfort and affect daily activities. With proper antifungal treatment and preventive care, most cases resolve quickly and completely.

Symptoms

The symptoms of vaginal candidiasis can range from mild irritation to severe discomfort. They often develop rapidly and may worsen without treatment.

Common symptoms include:

  • Intense itching and irritation in the vaginal and vulvar area

  • Thick, white vaginal discharge resembling cottage cheese (usually odorless)

  • Redness and swelling of the vulva

  • Burning sensation, especially during urination

  • Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse

  • Soreness and sensitivity of the vaginal tissues

  • Cracked or irritated skin around the vaginal opening

  • General discomfort in the pelvic area

In severe cases, symptoms may become persistent and significantly affect comfort and quality of life.

Causes

Vaginal candidiasis occurs when there is an imbalance in the vaginal microbiome, allowing Candida yeast to overgrow. Several factors can disrupt the natural protective environment of the vagina.

Common causes include:

  • Use of antibiotics that reduce healthy bacterial flora

  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation, or hormonal therapy

  • High estrogen levels

  • Weakened immune system

  • Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus

  • Excessive moisture or tight clothing that creates a warm environment

  • Use of irritating feminine hygiene products or douches

  • Sexual activity that may alter vaginal pH balance

  • Poor glycemic control in diabetic patients

In many cases, multiple contributing factors are involved in triggering the infection.

Risk Factors

Certain conditions and lifestyle factors can increase the likelihood of developing vaginal candidiasis or experiencing recurrent infections.

Major risk factors include:

  • Pregnancy

  • Use of oral contraceptives or hormone therapy

  • Recent or frequent antibiotic use

  • Diabetes, especially if poorly controlled

  • Weakened immune system

  • High estrogen levels

  • Wearing tight or non-breathable clothing

  • Excessive use of scented hygiene products

  • History of recurrent yeast infections

  • High-sugar diet (may contribute indirectly in some individuals)

Women with recurrent infections may require further medical evaluation to identify underlying causes.

Complications

Vaginal candidiasis is usually mild and treatable, but untreated or recurrent infections may lead to discomfort and other complications.

Possible complications include:

  • Chronic or recurrent yeast infections

  • Persistent vaginal irritation and inflammation

  • Skin fissures or small tears due to scratching

  • Increased susceptibility to secondary infections

  • Significant discomfort affecting daily activities and sleep

  • Pain during sexual intercourse leading to reduced quality of life

  • Emotional stress or anxiety due to recurring symptoms

  • Rare spread of infection in severely immunocompromised individuals

With timely antifungal treatment and proper preventive measures, complications can generally be avoided and vaginal health can be effectively restored.

When to see a doctor

Seek medical attention from a Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Obgyn) if you experience Vaginal Candidiasis. Early evaluation can help prevent complications and ensure appropriate treatment.
